SAICE SMART AWARDS for INNOVATION in Civil Engineering
The South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) announced the ‘The Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Achievements for 2005’ during their annual Awards Ceremony in Midrand on 12 October. The three prescribed categories are community-based, technical excellence and international projects. Both the SMART Awards and the ‘Photographic competition’ winners were also announced.
This year, Sanlam Cobalt provided the prize-money for the ’SANRAL-SAICE SMART AWARDS’, which are being awarded for innovation by individuals in the civil engineering field.
The winners of the 2005 SAICE ‘Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Achievements’ are:
- Community-based projects:
Winner: Ugu District Municipality Sanitation Programmes 4, 5 and 6
Commendation: African Renaissance Roads Upgrading Programme
- Technical Excellence projects:
Winner: Cradle of Humankind
Commendation: Mondi Secondary Effluent Treatment Plan
Commendation: Repairs to the CH Mitchell Bridge No B61 over the Mtamvuna River
- International Projects
Commendation: Government of Malawi/European Union Public Works Programme
The SMART AWARDS
This joint venture between SAICE and the South African National Roads Agency Ltd (SANRAL) was established to satisfy the need to award not only projects but individuals who come up with SMART solutions to problems or innovative inventions.
This year the SMARTest innovators were:
- Winners: Luigi Quaroni and Johan Wessels with their Terra-Grader.
The total prize-money for the winners was R18 000-00.
- Second: Kobus Burger with his ‘Universal sleeper and infrabolt’.
- Third: Daniel Veldtman with the Department of Public Works’ ‘Repair & Maintenance Programme (RAMP), followed by Manie Kriel for ‘Jobs Galore’ and Charles Marais with the ‘Pedestrian/Pipe Bridge’. Each of these received R2 000-00 in prize-money.
It has to be Smart in the sense of

M=magnificent thinking – innovation
A=amazing solution
R=right for the time and place
T=truly and proudly Civils South Afric
The SMART AWARDS look towards individuals who are combining SMART in an idea, design (large/small/component of a project), construction, maintenance (small objects, facilities or projects), urban/rural environment and academic/applied or industrial research. The award can be given to a component of a huge project or for a singular device/regime, etc. that could for instance revolutionise maintenance of roads/dam walls, etc.
The SMART Awards are aimed at creating high levels of awareness for the benefits associated with innovative thinking and practical solutions and applications in the field of civil engineering. Photographic competition
The winners of the annual SAICE photo competition were:
- Winner: ‘Maguga Dam Spills’ - photographer Rob Fraser of Ninham Shand
- First runner-up: ‘Launching the Moma Jetty’ – photographer Sally O’Donohue of Group 5
- Second runners-up: ‘Cranes in the Clouds’ and ‘Waterval Waste Water Treatment2’ both by Sally O’Donohue
